If you’ve watched TV at all this past month, you might have noticed a Korean Pop Star named Psy. His youtube music video called Gangnam Style has become the latest craze in pop culture. Psy has made recent guest appearances on The Today Show, Saturday Night Live, Ellen, and has even danced with Britney Spears. His song is currently #1 on iTunes despite the fact that the majority of the lyrics are not in English! You might wonder how a Korean pop star has become an overnight sensation in America, but I think the answer is obvious. Amongst the constant Political coverage in the media, Psy is silly, fun, and a welcome distraction.
The closer we get to November the more intense the political climate is becoming, and you can’t escape it. It’s on the T.V, the Radio, all over Facebook, and it’s even invaded Twitter! And if you haven’t noticed, there is tension surrounding this election almost every where you go; the gym, mall, church, ect. I’ve witnessed more arguments this past month then I have in a year (and I’ve been in a few myself). Everyone’s a bit on edge which is why Gangnam Style is such a refreshing mood changer!
If you haven’t seen the video yet you can check it out here.
When you watch this video you can’t help but smile and laugh. It is silly and ridiculous, which is what we need in a time of such seriousness. Psy wins you over with his catchy tune and his outrageous dancing. And while this just may be a one hit wonder, this song has successfully managed to break our attention away from the political drama for a second, and infuse the media with some good old light hearted fun.
Now I am not saying that this upcoming election isn’t important or that we shouldn’t pay attention to it. We definitely owe it to ourselves and our country to get informed, and stay up to date with latest developments. With that said, I find that it is all too easy to get swept up in the drama of it all. That’s why you need to be a little silly sometimes, to remind yourself what it feels like to have fun and lighten up.
Now Gangnam Style is certainly not everyones cup of tea. Which is why I would suggest finding something that resonates with you, and brings out your inner clown. Maybe its watching your favorite dumb comedy, or playing air guitar to your favorite 80’s rock band. Think about it, whens the last time you really let loose and acted ridiculous? Do you remember the last time you laughed so hard that you cried?
When I think back to some of my favorite memories they usually involved my friends and I doing something stupid and laughing our heads off. Those end up being some of the most memorable moments in your life. The ones that you can still laugh about 20 years later. As I was watching Psy’s video I realized its been a long time since I had a ridiculous amount of fun. It seems that everything gets so serious the older you get, why is that? When did we ever grow out of the stage of being silly?
We all need to have a little fun now and then. It is essential to not only our minds, but our bodies as well. When you are laughing and feeling joyous your cells work in harmony, feel good endorphins are released, and inflammation subsides. Yet when we are wrapped up in the drama of life everything tends to stagnate in our bodies and become constricted. Nothing is flowing the way it should which can manifest in headaches, inflamed joints, back aches, and even constipation. You need a little fun in your life to keep your body flowing and operating at its best.
So, am I saying that Psy’s Gangnam Style is good for your health? Well, in a way, yes. But more specifically, I am saying that having fun and being a little silly is an important part of living a healthy balanced life. I think Psy’s popularity is simply a reflection of our society’s desire to lighten up and embrace more joy.
There is so much drama in the world right now and it definitely has to be addressed. Stay informed, get involved, but every now and then turn off the news and dance…Gangnam Style.
