As 2012 is coming to an end most people are starting to focus on their goals and resolutions for the year ahead. I’m all about setting goals and making vision boards, but before we jump ahead to 2013, I think it’s important to clear out 2012. The end of the year is not only a great time to look at your future, but it’s also a great time to look at your past. So before I focus on goal setting for the year ahead I always take time to review the passing year. I like to look back on what worked and what didn’t work. I’ll reflect on some of my favorite memories and also some of my not so favorite memories. It’s a great way to figure out what you want more of in 2013, and what you want less of as well.
Below are a list of questions that I am currently using as a way to evaluate and clear out 2012, and to prepare for a fresh start in 2013. I suggest that you really take your time answering these questions. Get yourself a journal and give yourself an hour to write and contemplate.
What were some of your favorite memories from 2012? Think of all the magic moments from this past year. When were you the happiest? When did you laugh the most? When did you feel the most at peace?
What do these memories have in common? Did they take place with the same person? Same Place? Common activity?
How can you create similar memories in 2013? Do you need more time with your girlfriends? More time traveling? More alone time?
What were your least favorite moments of 2012? What are the incidents that you’re angry/upset about from this past year? What triggered you to be in a bad mood? What stressed you out?
Are there any actions that you can take to ensure that these past incidents don’t occur again in 2013? Do you need to change an unhealthy habit? End a toxic relationship? Take responsibility for your finances?
What did you accomplish in 2012 that you are really proud of? What goals did you meet? How did you touch others lives?
What actions and attitude helped you accomplish these tasks? Did you have to step out of your comfort zone? Conquer a fear? Develop a skill set?
What did not get accomplished in 2012 that you wish had? What goal/task did you not meet? Where do you wish you had acted differently?
How do you need to change to do things better in 2013? Do you need better time management skills? Do you need more self confidence?
What are you ready to leave behind and let go of from 2012? Old Fears, Old Behaviors, Toxic Relationships, Resentment, Grudges, etc..
What were some of the most profound lessons you learned this past year? What were some of your Ah-ha moments? Where did you gain the most insight? What did you learn about yourself?
What are you most grateful for from 2012? Your new job? A new home? Friendships? Partners? Your Health?
After you take the time to write this you will have a much clearer idea of what type of life you want to create in 2013. This little exercise will help you to identify your strengths and your weakness. You will see where you excel and where you still need to grow. It is also just a nice way to look back with gratitude on all the good times. No matter what type of year you had there is always something to be grateful for.
The last part of this exercise is a little burning ritual to help clear out any negative or stuck energy from this past year. Take the list of everything that you want to let go of from 2012 and burn it (safely in your sink please). This should include resentments, incidents that you still need to forgive, old stresses, as well as fears, limiting beliefs, and old negative patterns of thinking that you want to leave behind. Rituals can have a powerful impact on our lives. The act of burning this list sends out a strong intention to the universe that you are willing and ready to change and let go of that which no longer serves you. And in this simple gesture of willingness you will find that it is much easier to let of all these things that have been weighing you down.
From this place you are ready to start dreaming and planning for 2013. You now have a better idea of what you want and what you don’t want in your future. When you are in this cleansed state and have a clear mind you can make anything happen in the year ahead. The past is in the past and you have a clean slate to begin again. And remember you are a limitless being and no longer need to hold yourself back. So dream big, live big, and go big in 2013!
