I love September. This month means that cooler temperatures are on their way. That I will get to break out my fall wardrobe soon. And that the Pumpkin Spice Latte is finally back at Starbucks.
But what I love most about September is that it brings in a rush of new energy. Summer is lazy and restful, as it should be. But the fall is buzzing and energized. Maybe it’s because its the traditional start of the school year. Or the excitement of the holidays right around the corner. Whatever it is, September always feel like a mini New Years to me. A chance to reset and re-focus. There are 4 months left until 2014, how do you want to finish the year?
September is the perfect time to take inventory over what you’ve accomplished this past year, and focus on what do you want to accomplish in the months ahead. Are you where you thought you’d be at this point in the year? If not, what needs to change? This is not about beating yourself up, but it’s to help you get clear on what you need to spend your energy on over the next few months.
A little exercise I do is to take the different areas of my life and write down my goals/intentions for that particular category over the course of the next few months. Here are a few questions to get your started and help you focus in on what areas of your life you’d like to improve:
- Health: What are some fitness goals that you’d like to meet by the end of the year? How’s your every day diet holding up? Do you need to get a handle on a particular health concern? Are there are any new workouts of alternative therapies that you’d like to try before the year is out?
- Work: Are you happy with your work life? Do you need to update your resume, look for a new job, ask for a promotion, or start your own business? Where do you want to be financially at the end of the year? Are there any debts that you’d like to get paid off before the year is out? Are there any new skills that you need to learn to make yourself and your business more profitable?
- Relationships: How is the health of your relationships? Are you happy with your partner? Are you single and would like to start dating? Do you have quality friendships in your life? How often do you get to spend with your friends?
- Home/Family: Are there any house projects that you would like to finish before the year is out? Have you been spending enough quality time with your family? What activities would you like to do as a family before the year is out?
- Fun: When’s the last time you had a lot of fun? Is there any traveling you’d like to do before the end of the year? Any books you’d like to read? What would be some fun fall activities that you could pencil into your calendar?
These questions are not meant to overwhelm you and turn into a massive to-do list. They are simply meant to get you thinking about where you are at, and how you can best finish the year. Take some time to journal on these questions and be as general or specific as you want. Dream big! A lot can happen in 4 months. Then take it a step further and get clear on some action steps that you need to take over the next few months to make these goals/intentions a reality.
If you feel like 2013 hasn’t been going your way, here is your chance to turn it around. It’s not too late. Let’s all end the year happier, healthier, and richer then we began. Happy September!
