Now that January is almost to an end you might be feeling a little regret about breaking your resolutions. Maybe you haven’t even started them yet. 2014 began with a fresh clean slate, and perhaps it’s already tarnished. Or if you are like me, you might feel like you’re already falling behind.
Which is why I love that the Chinese New Year is just around the corner!
A chance to start over again. Another chance at a clean slate. Now I will really stick to my resolutions. I’ll keep going this time, and I won’t mess up! (read with a sarcastic tone).
I love the ritual of starting over and having another chance to get it right. Which is why I take full advantage of the Chinese New Year, which falls on the 30th of January. This past month was just practice, now I can get serious. I also love full moons, new moons, birthdays, the first of the month, the first day of each new season, and Mondays. To me they all symbolize a chance to start over again. To hit the reset button. To let go of the past and embrace a better future.
I even seek fresh starts with acupuncture. There are a few different types of treatments that can be done for clearing out old energy and inviting in new. These treatments are personal favorites of mine, and many of my patients. Who wouldn’t love a chance to release old hurts and anger while balancing your chakras at the same time?! (this is why acupuncture is awesome!)
All of these special days, rituals, and treatments really do carry a sense of hope and renewal with them. They really do give us a chance at a fresh start. But , there is one caveat… We need to understand that we will constantly be seeking that sense of renewal. Because here’s the thing, life is messy.
We can have the very best intentions to do everything right this time around, but things will go wrong. We can promise to change our ways, but there is a good chance that we may relapse into old behaviors. We can clear out all our old heart break and resentment, and guess what, we will probably experience heart ache again down the road. We’ll screw up, we’ll get lazy, we’ll fail. That’s real. That’s life.
But the good news is that it doesn’t matter how many times you mess up. It only matters how many times are you willing to pick yourself up and start over. How often will you recommit to change and growth. How many times will you be willing to forgive and move on. How often will you let yourself be inspired by the hope and promise of a fresh start.
And the best news is that we actually get that fresh start every day. With every sunrise we get another chance to get it right. Another chance to recommit to our highest goals and values. Another chance to let go.
While I still love my special days and rituals, the truth is we can start over any day. Every dawn brings with it hope and renewal. You can choose to change at any time, you don’t have to wait for a significant day.
For me I find comfort in knowing that every morning brings a new beginning. Maybe you messed up yesterday. That’s ok, let it go and choose to start fresh today. Maybe you got way off track the past few weeks. No big deal, you can start over now. Hit the reset button. Decide that things will be different. Then hit the reset button again, and again, and again. Enjoy and embrace the natural renewal and hope that comes with each new day.
With that being said, those who want to celebrate the Chinese New Year with me I invite you to join me at Elysian Fields on Saturday February 1st. At 10:30 there will be a lecture on how acupuncture can be used to clear, balance, and heal the chakras. And afterwards I will be doing private Chakrapuncture sessions.
