I love getting rid of stuff. I’ve never been one to hoard or hang onto things that no longer serve me. It’s pretty common for me to go through seasonal purges of my home and clean house. And with Spring just around the corner this is the perfect time of year to do some serious clearing work.
I use the word clearing instead of cleaning because I recommend purging your life, not just your home. What does that mean? Take a look at everything that is not working for you in your life. Maybe it’s your schedule, your group of friends, your diet, etc… What’s no longer serving you? What’s holding you back from becoming the best version of yourself?
Start with your space. Doing a little practical Spring cleaning is a perfect way to start. Give away clothes and shoes that you don’t wear. Go through files. Organize. Vacuum the corners. But go even further then that. Do you have old journals that are full of pages of anger and resentment? Get rid of them! Unless you think you are really going to sit down and read them one day, it’s just a pile of negative energy clouding up your space. Still have some items from your ex shoved in the back of the corner. Toss them and watch your love life improve. Does the art on your walls still inspire you? If not start shopping for some new pieces. Your home should be a reflection of you. It should inspire you. And it should be a place filled with positive energy. So if there is anything junking up that energy it’s time to let it go.
Now this one’s a tough one. It’s time to look at the people in your life, both in person and online. I understand that you can’t choose your family or your coworkers necessarily, but you can choose your friends. Are you hanging out with negative people? Is there always drama going on within your circle of friends? If so it’s time to say goodbye. I know this is easier said than done, believe me. But you have to think how much lighter and happier you will feel without these negative people bringing you down. Obviously no one is perfect, and we all have our bad days, but I promise you that there are plenty of positive happy people out there in the world. Same goes for online. Why be friends with people on facebook that are always posting negative comments? You don’t need to see that everyday. Unfriend, block, hide, whatever you’ve got to do, but keep your newsfeed happy. Remember you are a reflection of the people you spend the most time with. And your time and attention is valuable. So make sure you are spending it on people who will help lift you up and put a smile on your face.
Okay now it’s time to take a look at yourself. What habits are messing you up? Have you been living a healthy lifestyle? Are you taking time for self care? Have you been lazy in certain areas of your life? This is the time to get honest, take responsibility for your actions, and make some changes. These changes don’t have to be all consuming and overwhelming. Start simple. Start with the decision to change just one thing. You’ll find that with the momentum of this new Spring energy it’s easier to make changes that actually stick.
As for me, I am walking my talk. I got rid of a bunch of “stuff” from my home including some past relationship items. And while I pretty much only have awesome people in my life to begin with, there are a few drama makers that I am letting go of. I am also ready to really focus in on my health right now. From cleaning up my diet, amping up my workouts, and finally addressing some health issues I’ve had that have been holding me back from feeling my absolute best. This is me taking full responsibility for my life and my body.
