Does anyone remember the Choose Your Own Adventure books? I use to love these books as a kid. The story would always start out with you choosing 2 different possible scenarios. Either turn right or left, for example. Then depending on what you had decided you were sent to another chapter of the book where you were given another choice. This would go on through the entire story until you were either victorious on your path, or met your tragic end. Every possible path was a bit different, and depending on what choices you made determined what your story looked like.
Obviously an awesome prep book for life. Of course as a kid I made many bold choices while reading that book, because I wanted to see how crazy I could make the story. But in real life I played it pretty safe, until recently that is.
This year I’ve been thinking a lot about the concept of choosing our own adventures. In fact adventure is my word for 2014. If you have been reading my past few blogs you may have notice that I’ve been more focused on having fun and taking risks. Going way out of my comfort zone and doing things that I would normally never do. All because I want to live a more interesting life. I want to have more fascinating stories to tell. I want to have amazing memories. I want to live an adventurous life.
So I’ve been making more bold choices. I’ve been going way out of my comfort zone. And I’ve been flooding my life with all sorts of new experiences. Just so that I can reflect back on this year and view at as an epic adventure. One filled with tons of fun memories, and I’ll have the pictures to prove it.
Last weekend I participated in a 5k Color Run. My girlfriend and I woke up bright and early on a Saturday, got all dressed up in these ridiculous matching outfits, and ran 3 miles as we got covered with this powdered color dye. Now 3 miles is not a big deal for me so it wasn’t much of a challenge or a workout. The “washable” dye took me 3 showers to scrub it off of my skin. And I have no idea what I am going to do with the colored tutu that I bought from the girls department of Target. So why did I do it? Because it was silly and fun! Because when do you get a chance to throw colored dye at each other? Because it makes an awesome memory! That’s why I did it.
When I’m faced with a choice this year my motto is to choose the adventurous one. Choose the path that will make me laugh the most. The one that will grow me the most. And yes the one that will give me the best photos. It might not be practical or conventional by any means, but it’s fun.
This week I challenge you to do something ridiculous! Do something that is silly and fun! Stop being a boring adult and play more. You decide how exciting or how dull your life is going to be. You create your experiences, and don’t you want to create some interesting ones? Choose your own adventure, and make it a good one.
