I’m in the business of transformation. At our center we help people transform their health, transform their bodies, and transform their minds. I am passionate about transformation. I have enough experience now to know that any part of our lives can be transformed with the right tools and process. To me there is nothing more exciting then the possibility that everything and anything can be changed. Which is why I love New Years! New Years is all about transformation.
Every year I practice quite an extensive New Years ritual. First I de-clutter my home and reorganize. I get rid of any items I no longer want, go through all my files, clean out every drawer, cabinet, and closet, and then reorganize and redecorate. Once my external world is de-cluttered then it’s time to go inward. I spend some time reflecting on the year that has passed and make a list of everything that I am ready to let go of. This may be old limiting beliefs, certain relationships, and any built up anger and resentment. Next comes the fun part, what do I want to create in 2015?
And this is the question I want to pose to you. We have a new year ahead of us. A blank slate. Anything is possible. What do you want to do? What area’s of your life do you want to change? And who do you have to become to make those changes?
The last question is the most important in the transformation equation. It may be easy to list a number of goals and dreams, but to actually reach those visions you have to address who you have to become in the process.
I was journaling and writing a bunch of business goals for myself, and I realized that in order for me to reach these goals I need to make some changes and get rid of some old limiting beliefs. To become the person that I have to in achieving these goals I need to increase my confidence, speak up more and be assertive, and stop avoiding difficult conversations where I am afraid to hurt someone’s feelings. If I truly want to reach my ideal vision for my business these changes are a necessity. It’s not about changing the essence of who I am, but it’s about growing and developing character.
Now identifying what needs to be changed is just the first step. Next I have to see how I am going to make those changes. I know that I am not automatically going to wake up on the 1st and suddenly be confident and assertive. So what actions do I have to take to make these changes? I put together a plan that involves modeling business mentors that embody the qualities that I am looking to develop, working with a coach on my confidence, and role playing with a mentor when I have to navigate difficult conversations. I know that these changes won’t happen automatically, but that is why I put a specific action plan in place. I created a process that I can track and measure, and mentors to keep me accountable.
If you want to lose weight, you need a plan and a process. If you want to heal from a disease, you need a plan and a process. If you want to develop a new skill, you need a plan and a process. You get the idea.
This New Years don’t just write down a bunch of goals, write down an action plan as well. Make it doable and trackable. Ideally you want to work with a coach or mentor to help keep you accountable as well. Without an action plan your goals will just remain dreams. Decide who you want to become in 2015 and how you are going to become it. Make this the year that you transform.
